“Vic? I’m scared.”

“I know. But we have to move; it’s important. Another train is coming. We have to keep moving.”

“Ok,” she said, and continued to shuffle along the ledge beside him.

Only three or four more minutes passed before she felt him step back, into the wall somehow, and she took another two steps to find they had reached some type of landing. There was no light. It was so dark that she had started seeing phantoms flash in her field of view. The air was thick and dirty and smelled burnt. Vic clicked on a flashlight, and she could see they were standing in a carve-out of the tunnel wall with a door leading somewhere on the far side.
